Masters of Wood

The oaks, redwoods and cypresses are calling us to plant their acorns and their seeds. For months I have been gathering, germinating and growing seedlings of oak, redwood and cypress. I am well on my way to my goal of planting one million trees. I have witnessed the dwindling oak population, the near decimation of the ancient redwood forests and the fragile cypresses on the endangered list. I sat quietly at the foot of these relics and contemplated their future. Our future. In the quiet stillness I heard a faint call. It started out small and began to grow. I ruffled the needles and leaves on the ground and discovered a treasure trove. For years these tiny seeds and acorns waited patiently for this moment.

Reforestation. A three year project in the making. When these tiny seedlings become mature trees they will consume 100,000 tons of carbon a year; more than any living thing on our planet. Trees are constantly giving. Giving energy, oxygen, life. And the wood from trees builds our homes, heats our stoves and sustains our way of living. Renewable sustainable reforestation. When the trees are big enough it will take an army to plant them throughout our community, our county and our state. In the next three years I will be searching for places and people to help me with this massive project.

Humans the planet over are searching for the answer to a green future. Many are busy thinking of ways to minimize their imprints. For me the answer, beautifully simple, is at my feet and in the palm of my hand. My wife and I are in the process of maximizing our imprint by planting one million trees. This is our legacy.
